In March of 2016, Goodwill of Orange County and Providence St. Joseph Hospital in Orange started a powerful partnership to create a more inclusive and caring workforce in Orange County.” By joining hands, Goodwill OC and St. Joseph’s goal was to provide unique career opportunities in the healthcare industry for individuals with diverse abilities. Their collaborative efforts have led to remarkable outcomes – for both the individuals supported and the culture of St. Joseph’s.
St. Joseph’s Environmental Services (EVS) Director Omar, along with all of the hospital’s caregivers, wholeheartedly embraced and supported Goodwill OC’s Supported Employment program, a workforce development program designed to help individuals with developmental disabilities access career opportunities. Together, they created a nurturing environment that
facilitated meaningful work and embodied inclusion.
The program successfully matched Christian, Lauren, Gary, Carlo and Trung from the Supported Employment program with openings in the EVS Department. On the EVS Team, their tasks include: Servicing different areas of the hospital such as the ER, NICU, basement area and service discharge rooms, disinfecting all areas of the hospital, and cleaning patient rooms.
The team, working alongside a job coach, excelled in their new roles – learning the ins and outs of their tasks and responsibilities and understanding the important part they play in the care and quality of service St. Joseph’s gives to every patient. After a short time, St. Joseph’s extended full
time employment opportunities to all four individuals. The hospital’s dedication to actively engaging with program participants to make sure they felt a part, an important part, of the larger hospital team, fostered a sense of belonging and empowerment.
